SMU Mustangs’ corners take center stage as they look to shut down Cal’s receivers and avenge last season’s ACC title game heartbreak. Can Jayvon Thomas and Marcellus Barnes lock down Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and the Golden Bears’ aerial attack, especially with Tyren Polley out for the year? Grayson Singleton explains why SMU’s improvements in pass coverage could be the X-factor, and what vengeance in this matchup might mean for their playoff ambitions. On the offensive side, SMU’s run game faces a vulnerable Cal rush defense that has struggled to stop anyone, surrendering over 200 yards per game. Singleton highlights Kendrick Raphael and a committee of backs as the keys to capitalizing once the Mustangs grab an early lead. He also uncovers the benefits—and drawbacks—of SMU’s string of 11 AM kickoffs, arguing why this schedule could fuel the team’s late-season success. Can SMU turn these early starts into a momentum advantage?
